Life has a way of knocking us down when we least expect it. One moment, everything seems to be in place: career, family, future, and then, in an instant, everything shatters.
For Michael L. McCord, the author of One Step at a Time: Memoir of a Former Quadriplegic, that moment came when a devastating accident left him quadriplegic, with doctors giving him only a 10% chance of ever walking again.
But what followed was not just a medical recovery but a journey of faith, resilience, and divine intervention.
The Dark Night of the Soul
We all have moments in life when we feel like giving up. For Michael, it wasn’t just the paralysis; it was the avalanche of losses that followed.
He lost his job, his sense of independence, and even his marriage. Lying in a hospital bed, unable to move, the world he had built seemed to be crumbling around him.
Despair has a way of convincing us that we are alone. But sometimes, in our darkest hour, we experience something extraordinary, something beyond logic or reason. This moment came to him in the form of divine guidance.
Signs from the Universe
It began when he asked God, “What am I going to do to get out of this?” Immediately he heard the following words: “Do what’s doable whenever you can, Work on your areas of strength first, and never give up.” Throughout his recovery, Michael encountered other situations that seemed too divine to be coincidences: A walking cane mysteriously appeared in his car long before he ever needed one and a voice, gentle but firm, reassured him at a devastating point, saying, “Don’t worry, everything is going to be fine.” So against all medical predictions, his body began to heal.
Was it faith? Was it the power of the mind? Or was it something greater?
The Power of Belief and Prayer,
Michael didn’t rely on medical treatments. He turned to meditation, visualization and a deep exploration of the universe’s mysteries. He discovered the power of focused thought, the impact of positive intention, and the undeniable truth that faith, belief and seeing the world through eyes of love rather than fear can move mountains, sometimes even broken bodies. As Bruce Lee said, “the only limitations we have are those we place upon ourselves.”
He found solace in spiritual teachings, from quantum physics to ancient wisdom, all pointing to the idea that we are more than flesh and bone. He also prayed but not in the sense of asking for anything but requesting Divine guidance to reclaim his right to health and happiness. We are energy, deeply connected to the universe, through a force greater than ourselves. This force is called the observer effect. Everything in the universe is a vibration and science has proven that the observer can, through focused intent and action, change that vibration and thereby change reality. In addition, there is a Divine force in the universe that goes beyond the mind-body connection that can be accessed through faith. This is how miracles happen.
Hope for Those Struggling
Michael’s story is a reminder for all of us who have faced adversity, loss, and despair that the dawn will come no matter how dark the night is.
Divine intervention doesn’t always come in the form of grand miracles. Sometimes, it’s the quiet reassurance in our hearts, the unexpected kindness of a stranger, or the unexplainable feeling that we are being guided toward something more significant.
If you are struggling right now, if your life feels like it’s falling apart, take heart and know that you are in control of every situation and how you view it will affect the outcome. Open your heart to the possibility that you are being guided, even if you don’t yet see the path. Because sometimes, the greatest miracles happen when we least expect them but exactly when we need them the most.
Michael L. McCord records his journey of incredible medical feats in his memoir, One Step at a Time: Memoir of a Former Quadriplegic.
It took Mike five years to write his memoir because he had to relive every painful moment, both physically and emotionally. There were times he had to put the project on hold, sometimes for a month, just to collect himself before finding the will to proceed. But he persevered because he believed the lessons he learned were too important to keep to himself. He wanted to share them with others who are or have been, experiencing life’s challenges.
Now, whenever Michael signs a book, he always writes, “Through faith, belief, and action, all things are possible. Never give up on your dreams.”
So, hold on. Keep believing. The universe may just be working behind the scenes on your miracle.
